ɫ Rep's production of "Intimate Apparel," a play written by Pulitzer Prize winner Lynn Nottage, will open an eight-show run on Nov. 10 at the Goode Theatre.
The San Diego Union-Tribune describes "Intimate Apparel," which premiered in 2003, as a "delicate tapestry woven from hope, longing and a wistful acknowledgment of disappointments reckoned with and limitations faced."
Set in 1905 in New York City, "Intimate Apparel" is based on the life of Nottage's great-grandmother. It tells the story of Esther, an African American seamstress with quiet dreams who supports herself by making exquisite negligees and corsets for women across the social strata. But when a distant suitor reaches out through poignant and sensitive letters, her life changes. Through friendship, betrayal and hope, she stitches a new life.
Nottage, who frequently writes about marginalized people, is the only woman to win the drama Pulitzer Prize twice - for "Ruined" in 2009 and "Sweat" in 2017.
The ɫ production will be directed by Brittney S. Harris, a faculty member in the Department of Communication and Theatre Arts in the College of Arts and Letters.
"Intimate Apparel" is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Nov. 10-13 and 18-20 and 2 p.m. Nov. 21. Tickets can be purchased at this .
